Brief synopsis
In the mid-1500s in southwestern France, a peasant named Martin Guerre deserts his family and village. Years later, a man returns claiming to be Martin—accepted by Martin’s wife and neighbours—and lives in his place, taking on his identity, property and relationship. Eventually the real Martin shows up (or at least someone very like him) and a dramatic legal and social conflict erupts over who the returning man really is, whether the wife and villagers were complicit, what identity means, how the courts of the Ancien Régime grappled with proof of personhood in a pre-photograph era. Davis uses archival records and the legend of the case to explore themes of identity, marriage, law, social life of peasants, and how ordinary people inhabited their roles in early modern Europe.
